Introduction

In the current era of globalization, evolution of technology has given hopes to youth for better job opportunities while there is still large-scale unemployment even amongst educated youth in the developing countries. Non-availability of appropriately technically trained human resource to meet requirements of industry is one of the main reasons for this dichotomy. 

Geoinformatics is a newly emerging field with wide ranging applications in almost all walks of life. Launching of SIG is a significant contribution of Symbiosis to the nation in bringing the future technology within its reach. SIG provides a two-year postgraduate M. Sc. programme and opens a variety of opportunities for aspiring graduates to build their careers in this exciting field.  It aims to train and empower professionals for analytical decision-making and in creating a potent resource of experts in geoinformatics to meet future challenges & high demand for skilled manpower.

Response of GIS Industry to course curriculum of SIG continues to be encouraging right from the beginning.  As in the case of the first two batches, all eligible students of our third batch also received tremendous response to their requests for allotment of projects-cum-placement. 

 
Vision

To create a professional human resource in the field of Geo-spatial Technology; equipped with IT and information Management skills; to cater to the global Geoinformatics industry requirements.

Mission
  • To impart rigorous training in Geoinformatics encompassing GIS, Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing.
  • Lay special emphasis on industry requirements such as Automated Mapping / Facility Management, Vehicle Tracking, E-Governance and Spatial Decision Support Systems.
  • Enable students with additional IT and Business management skills leading to an elevated career profile.
  • Provide industry exposure through extensive project work matching global expectations.
  • Provide contemporary training abreast with the latest technology trend.
Infrastructure

SIG has Infrastructure ideally suited to conduct training, which exposes students to the recent developments taking place in the corporate world of Geoinformatics.
Our laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art computing facilities; such as:

  • Powerful computers in network environments with large monitors.
  • Server for centralized resources management.
  • Internet facilities for world wide literature referencing.
  • GIS software suits that are mostly preferred in the industry.
  • Image processing software suits that are much in use in the industry.
  • Photogrammetry software suits.
  • Global Positioning System equipment.
  • Programming tools.
  • Quality management tools.
  • satellite image interpretation facility.
  • Data in terms of maps and imageries from varied sources.
A library with books on a variety of subjects is available for use of the students. SIG is also member of the British Council Library and has arranged to avail library facilities with the sister organizations. A well-established hostel and canteen facility centrally established by the Symbiosis Society canteen for the needs of the use of the students.  Students from SIG are offered limited seats by the Society in the hostel on first come first served basis.

The Symbiosis Centre of Health Centre (SCHC) is an in-house Health Care Centre exclusively for staff and students of Symbiosis. Each student is insured under Medi-claim and Road Traffic Accident policies. SIHS also has a modern state-of-the-art health club and fitness center to facilitate all round development of the students.

SIG has had an enviable track record of 100% placements. Our distinguished visitors for campus placement included representatives of well known GIS industries, viz; CyberTech Systems and Software Ltd., Reliance Industries Ltd, Reliance Energy Ltd., Reliance Communication Pvt.Ltd.  Fugro Survey India Ltd. from Mumbai, ESRI India, Tata Consultancy Services, Inca Informatics Pvt. Ltd. from Delhi, Lavasa Corporation, Kalyani Net Ventures Ltd. Patni Computer Ltd. from Pune, Speck SpatialTech Ltd. from Hyderabad, Magnasoft Consultancy Services from Bangalore, Geofiny Technologies Pvt.Ltd. from Chennai to name a few.

 
Career Prospects

SIG has designed the course based on in-depth discussions with representative of industries, academicians and extensive study of websites hosting job requirements of Geoinformatics industry. Apart from the requirements of the private sector, giant corporate sectors have further enhanced applications of Geoinformatics to cater to the requirements of government and public sectors. In addition to the industries few additional prominent names in GIS industries functioning in India are ESRI (NIIT – GIS), Rolta India Ltd., RMSI Ltd., Intergraph, Erdas India, Siemens, Oracle Inc., L&T, Satyam, Hughes Tata Infotech, Avenion, Weston Technologies and so on.

 
Eligibility

Graduates or Post Graduates in Science, Agriculture, Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Science, Management and Commerce with 50% ( 45 % for SC / St ) marks in either in graduation or post graduation . Final year students awaiting results may also apply.

Total intake is 80 students.
